Welcome to South Orange & Maplewood!

District at a glance

The School District of South Orange and Maplewood (SOMSD) serves approximately 7,000 students in ten schools, including one early-childhood center, six elementary schools, two middle schools, and Columbia High School, New Jersey’s oldest public high school. The community and its schools are racially and economically diverse, with over 90 percent of Columbia High School graduates planning to attend college or pursue postsecondary training in vocational industries each year.

Every child enters our schools with boundless curiosity, unique gifts, and the spark of possibility. It is our responsibility — and our calling — to nurture that spark, to guide each learner as they discover who they are, what ambitions they have, and how they might shape the world around them.

The South Orange & Maplewood School District's mission is to awaken that potential by inspiring students to imagine boldly, pursue their passions with purpose, and work together to create a brighter future. We do this by cultivating a learner-centered environment, opening multiple pathways to success, and reimagining the structures, systems, and supports that shape learning. Through innovative teaching, genuine partnership with families, and the collective wisdom of our community, we prepare our students not only to thrive but to lead, create, and transform the world they inherit.

To discover what’s next for our schools, see the District Goals for 2025-2026, a clear and confident roadmap rooted in measurable growth that unites schools, staff, and families in pursuit of excellence across every classroom.
