You Are Not Alone. We Are Here to Help.

The South Orange & Maplewood School District is committed to the safety, well-being, and belonging of every student.

We recognize that young people sometimes experience emotional distress that can feel overwhelming. Suicide prevention is an important part of our student wellness efforts.

Our approach centers on:
  • Early identification and support
  • Caring, trusted relationships
  • Skill-building and coping strategies
  • Family partnership
  • Connection to community resources
Reaching out is a sign of strength.
If your child needs support, we are here to listen, care, and connect them to help.
Why student mental health matters

Student mental health is a vital part of learning, growth, and overall well-being. When students feel safe, supported, and emotionally healthy, they are better able to focus, build positive relationships, and reach their academic potential.

Challenges such as stress, anxiety, peer conflict, and life changes can affect any child, and early support makes a meaningful difference. Our schools are committed to caring for the whole child by building social-emotional skills, fostering belonging, and ensuring students and families can access caring professionals and helpful resources.

The supports on this page are designed to partner with families so every student feels seen, heard, valued, and equipped to thrive in and out of the classroom.

What is NJTSS?

New Jersey Tiered System of Supports

NJTSS is our framework for supporting students' mental health, behavior, and overall well-being so they can succeed in school.

We provide:
  • Schoolwide supports that promote positive mental health for all students
  • Small-group support for students who need extra help with coping, emotions, or peer relationships
  • Individualized support for students facing more significant challenges

Our NJTSS team partners with families to identify concerns early, provide support, and connect families to helpful resources. If you would like to request assistance, please reach out to your school's NJTSS Coordinator.
