JASON BING

SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS
Administration Building
SENIOR LEADERSHIP TEAM, SUPERINTENDENT'S OFFICE

Superintendent Jason Bing believes school should prepare students for real life, not just graduation. In the South Orange & Maplewood School District, he is focused on expanding opportunities beyond the classroom, including internships, career pathways, and college-connected programs so students leave with both knowledge and direction.

Mr. Bing brings extensive experience as an educational leader across New Jersey and New York. He began his career as a teacher in North Plainfield before moving into leadership roles in Phillipsburg and Great Meadows Regional School Districts, where he became one of the youngest superintendents in New Jersey at the time. He later served as Superintendent in Barnegat and Bloomfield, and as Deputy Superintendent in a large New Jersey district supporting more than 30,000 students. He has also held regional leadership roles in New York as a County and BOCES Superintendent, working closely with the State Education Department to support school districts at a broader level.

A significant part of his work has focused on shaping career and technical education at the state level. As a contributor to New Jersey’s Perkins V State Plan, he has helped guide how schools connect students to career pathways and how programs are supported through funding and policy. This work helps ensure that schools are preparing students for a changing economy while expanding access to meaningful opportunities for all learners.

At the district level, that vision is reflected in expanded access to Advanced Placement courses, early college programs that allow students to earn college credits while still in high school, and career pathways aligned with workforce needs. As an Aspen Institute Workforce Development Fellow and a member of the New Jersey Department of Education’s Career and Technical Education Advisory Council, Bing has strengthened the connection between K-12 education and industry.

Mr. Bing holds two master’s degrees from Kean University in Educational Leadership and Instruction & Curriculum, along with a degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. His background also includes specialized fellowships focused on history and social justice, which continue to inform his approach to inclusive education.

His leadership style is grounded in relationships. He works closely with families, staff, and students because he believes progress is built through trust and shared understanding. As he often says, "Once you build relationships, the work gets easier."

A Union Township native, husband to a fellow educator, and father of a middle schooler, Mr. Bing brings both professional experience and personal perspective to his role. His focus for the district is clear: strong schools, expanded opportunities, and a community working together to support every student.

"SOMSD has all the components to be among the nation’s top school districts. When schools, families, and the community move together, there is no limit to what our students can achieve."
