South Orange & Maplewood School District
Many Voices, Two Towns, One District
525 Academy Street
Maplewood
NJ
07040

The departments in South Orange & Maplewood (SOMSD) work together as a cohesive team bringing expertise to support student learning and well-being in the school system. The Office of the Superintendent provides overall leadership for the South Orange & Maplewood School District, setting priorities and providing a steady vision for each school building. The district's three assistant superintendents oversee key areas of Special ServicesCurriculum & Instruction, and HIB & Title IX/Affirmative Action that directly impact students every day. The Administrative Building determines classroom content, helps maintain safe and respectful school environments, and ensures that students with varied learning needs receive appropriate support to achieve excellence.

The Business Office manages the district’s finances, working to use resources wisely and improve budgeting processes. By identifying cost savings and planning carefully, the district prioritizes its needs where they matter most— supporting students, staff, and strong schools.

These district services and their component offices work together toward the District Goals and create optimal conditions for every student to learn, grow, and succeed.

South Orange and Maplewood’s public schools began as small, local institutions built to serve a growing community. As the region developed, the school system had to evolve quickly, moving from a handful of buildings with informal practices into a modern district with consistent standards, clear oversight, and the capacity to serve thousands of students.

Across the decades, SOMSD has continued to expand and professionalize, building specialized departments, improving facilities, and strengthening districtwide programs. Modern services in the district are important components of coordinated work, enabling schools to run smoothly, supporting students and families, stewards public resources responsibly, and keeping the district responsive as our community and educational needs continue to change.
