Education for Displaced Children and Youth
The South Orange & Maplewood School District follows the protections of the McKinney-Vento Act to support students facing housing instability by keeping them connected to school without interruption. When a family is displaced or in temporary housing, the district works quickly to ensure immediate enrollment, access to transportation when needed, and continuity in a child’s school placement so learning and relationships remain stable. Staff help families navigate paperwork challenges, maintain or transfer records, and understand their rights, with the goal of reducing stress during an already difficult time.
In addition to federal requirements, SOMSD follows New Jersey’s 6A:17 regulations to provide clear procedures, fast support, and coordinated communication across schools, community partners, and state agencies. The district’s approach centers on dignity and stability: ensuring every student receives a thorough and efficient education, whether they are in temporary housing, resource family care, or a state facility. Families can expect responsive guidance, warm handoffs, and ongoing problem-solving so that students stay engaged, supported, and connected to the school community.
District administrators in the Office of the Assistant Superintendent of Schools serve as the district liaison for families and to the New Jersey Department of Education.
