DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS

Student Voice & Agency

The South Orange & Maplewood School District encourages Columbia High School students to take the lead in telling the stories that define our schools. The district provides opportunities for students to step into real communication and leadership roles, using their creativity, curiosity, and voice to shape how our community sees itself. These initiatives support Superintendent Jason Bing's focus on career readiness for students.

Students can take charge of projects such as:

  • Leading social media campaigns and creating original content
  • Writing student features, news stories, and event recaps
  • Producing photo and video coverage for school and district events
  • Designing graphics or promotional materials that elevate school pride
  • Developing new ways to strengthen student-to-community engagement

Open to students with all levels of creative experience, these initiatives offer hands-on opportunities to contribute to journalism, media production, and digital strategy. Participants work alongside their school administrators and the district’s Communications Office to gain mentorship while driving projects that make a visible impact.

These programs are designed for students who want to lead, collaborate, and create change. By taking ownership of communication and storytelling, these student communicators not only build professional skills: they help shape the voice of our SOMA school community.
