Welcome to the Department of Special Services
What are special services?
Special services are governed by the New Jersey Administrative Code, Title 6A, Chapter 14, Special Education (NJAC 6A:14). These services are designed to meet the special needs of students who may be experiencing difficulty in accessing the general education curriculum or experiencing difficulty in adjusting fully to the daily requirements of the general classroom environment. Emphasis is placed upon offering services that are responsive to a student’s individual learning style and educational disability.
Reference Guide to the Special Education Process
The Special Education Reference Guide offers a clear overview of the special education process in the South Orange & Maplewood School District, guiding families and staff from initial intervention through the development of an Individualized Education Program (IEP).
It explains how Child Study Teams identify, evaluate, and support students with educational disabilities in partnership with general education programs. Designed as a practical resource, it outlines district procedures while emphasizing inclusion and alignment with New Jersey Special Education Law.
