The School District of South Orange & Maplewood proudly serves around 7,000 students across ten schools, including one early childhood center, six elementary schools, and two middle schools that prepare students to succeed at Columbia High School – New Jersey’s oldest public high school.

Columbia High School’s varsity ultimate frisbee teams, CHS Open and Sparkle Motion, have each won their respective New Jersey State Championships. The Open team earned its 17th title, while Sparkle Motion secured its 7th, marking four consecutive wins since 2022. These victories highlight the students’ athletic excellence, leadership, and commitment to the Spirit of the Game.
Maplewood Middle has a small parking lot for employees, so most members of the faculty and staff park on Salter Ave or Maple Ave along the side of the school. The on-street parking and the two-way traffic pattern were a problem, so the team focused on designing a plan to implement the new Crossguard barricade to replace the saw-horse barriers and a one-way loop in the morning.
This incredible achievement is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and teamwork shown by our student-athletes and coaching staff throughout the season. We are proud of their commitment and the positive example they set for our entire school community.
An incident took place in the student parking lot involving a Columbia High School student who was a victim of robbery and individuals who are not affiliated with the school or the South Orange & Maplewood School District on June 2nd.

School counselors don’t just guide students—they transform lives. Columbia High School’s Karissa Handler has done just that, and now, the New Jersey School Counselor Association is recognizing her impact.
What happens when middle school students take traffic safety into their own hands? In Maplewood, it leads to real change. Thanks to a team of innovative young minds from Maplewood Middle School’s STEAM Tank Team, a new one-way traffic plan designed to improve student safety is set to take effect on Monday, March 24th.
Superintendent's Corner
We hosted a second virtual town hall for the residency confirmation that our Registration Office will be conducting for Grade 8 families at South Orange Middle School and Maplewood Middle School to outline the upcoming residency verification process for all 8th-grade students transitioning to 9th grade. This verification will now take place every three years to ensure accurate student records. Maintaining up-to-date residency data helps the district plan for class sizes, staffing, transportation, and budgeting.
The enrollment period will re-open, on Thursday, March 27th at 9:00 am for those eligible to attend school next year. The extended time frame will close promptly at 12 pm, on Tuesday, April, 1st. No additional extensions will be allowed.
We are pleased to share an update on the ongoing work on the Columbia High School stage. Progress continues, and last week, the rigging company was on-site with a lift to take additional measurements to incorporate changes requested by our community action group.

We have a couple of busy weeks at Columbia High School, so I wanted to just review our course selection process, which is wrapping up, and our testing schedule for next week.
Dear CHS Families: The email below was sent to all students informing them of a neat, new opportunity if they are interested in local history. I worked with a community resident (and former colleague from another district), Mr. Ron Nash, and our invitation to join the Smithsonian's Dialogue in Democracy project and Columbia High School was invited to participate. At the 67th Annual GRAMMY Awards, two Columbia High School alumni from New Jersey stood at the pinnacle of the music industry, adding to their growing collection of GRAMMY awards.
MMS will participate in Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action February 3-7, 2025. This week inspires our theme for the entire month. Our theme for Black History Month is taken from this year’s Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action: “All Ages of Activism.” Look for more information on how we will recognize this theme through the month through learning experiences, music, art installations, social media highlights, and more!
